Your dog is unique, so their training should be too

For me it's never a one size fits all but instead creating a bespoke training plan after taking the time to understand your dog. That being said there are key elements to how I structure individual plans.

Key elements of every plan

  1. Motivation

The vital first step before any 'training' starts: what does your dog truly find rewarding? What is their favourite part of the prey sequence? Do they value social interaction or do they just want to get their nose down and sniff? Some of the many important things we need to take into consideration, as well as investing time into building toy and food drive, developing your own handling skills and mechanics when it comes to how to deliver rewards - how will depend on the questions above and your dog's personality.

  2. Reward marker system

Before we get stuck into training we need to create clear communication between you and your dog. Reward markers that the dog understands means they know what their reward is and where it's coming from. It's also important you learn when to choose which way to reward depending on your dog's mindset in that moment and what we're trying to achieve. This is an invaluable skill that can often be overlooked.

  3. Fulfillment

Another vital but often overlooked part of training. Is your dog getting everything they need? This doesn't just mean food, water and exercise - are they getting opportunities to meet their genetic needs and natural behaviours they long for? Often so many behaviour problems or issues you're having can be dramatically improved with fulfilling their needs. Sometimes it can be hard to know how to do this or understand what your dog needs, this is something I can help with and the best part? It's FUN!

  4. Training

Now the training can start! Of course just like all the other steps this will vary depending on your dog, but no matter what we're working on all training is broken down into smaller training tasks so your dog can fully understand and so you don't get overwhelmed too.

  5. Proofing

Such a vital step that can be so much fun! Although proofing is the last step in this sequence it's not a 'final step' - it's something I like to sprinkle through the whole process. This way we can ensure all the work you're putting in is effective long term no matter where you are or what you're doing with your dog. Building duration, increasing difficulty and working around all kinds of distractions.
